The green and gold will by flying in Olympic stadium
All eyes will be on the athletics stadium in Maracana when the track and field stars get their chance to shine in Rio. Athletics will be the largest section of the 2016 Australian Olympic Team with 61 athletes to compete in the green and gold taking on some of the biggest names in world sport including Usain Bolt, who is aiming to do another triple-triple, which is the 100m, 200m, 4x100m at the same Games.
Defending 50km walk champion and team captain, Jared Tallent will lead the Australian Team.
Athletes to watch: Competing in both race walking events, Jared Tallent will be looking for his fourth Olympic medal and a defense of his 50km walk title will see his regarding as Australia’s greatest ever male athlete. Dane Bird-Smith, whose father and coach Dave Smith was a dual Olympian, is a big chance for a medal in Rio.
There will be a strong sea of green and gold in throwing events. 2009 World Champion Dani Samuels will compete in her third Olympic Games and looking to secure her first medal. In the women’s javelin Kathryn Mitchell could be a dark horse. In recent years she has been a finalist at the Olympic and world championships and this year she has achieved eight straight podium finishes, including five wins.
Dual Commonwealth champion Alana Boyd competes in her third Games and has returned from an early year injury to regain the Oceania pole vault record. Also in the jumps could current world championships silver medallist, Fabrice Lapierre, add to Australia’s four-silver medal Olympic streak. Three athletes on debut, Brooke Stratton (long jump), Eleanor Patterson (high jump) and Kurtis Marschall (pole vault) have the look of a future podium finish.
Australia's middle distance stocks have never been stronger with two of our best in history Ryan Gregson and Jeff Riesley leading a rising group of talent including Linden Hall, Luke Mathews and Jenny Blundell.
London Olympians Michael Shelley and Jess Trengove are coming off 2014 Commonwealth Games gold and bronze marathon medals respectively. There will be plenty of green and gold on the streets of Rio cheering on all six marathon runners and the full walking contingent.
Australia qualified a women’s 4x400m relay spot in 2015 at the World Relay Championships. The team in Rio will be the first Australian women’s relay since Sydney 2000.

Australia and Olympic Athletics
The Australian athletics team has delivered three medals in the London 2012 campaign, with super Sally Pearson breaking the Olympic record to win 100m hurdles gold, Jared Tallent eventually being crowned the Olympic champion in the 50km walk and Mitchell Watt leaping to silver in the long jump.
At the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games the Australian athletics team triumphed over years of frustration. Returning home with four medals- the most in athletics since Mexico City in 1968- athletics in Australia was delivered a rush of confidence. Hooker had soared to gold in the pole vault, Pearson had achieved the unthinkable winning sprint silver in the 100m hurdles, and on debut Jared Tallent won silver and bronze in the 20km and 50km walks.
Australia has enjoyed a rich history in Olympic athletics history all the way back to when Olympic trailblazer Edwin Flack won the 800 and 1500m in 1896. Names such as Herb Elliott, Shirley Strickland, Raelene Boyle and Marjorie Jackson dominated the world athletics scene in the 1950s and 60s. One of Australia's most memorable Olympic victories across any sport came from athletics at the Sydney 2000 Games when Cathy Freeman carried the hopes of the whole country on her back to win gold in the 400m.
Australia's Olympic athletics medal tally is: 71 (21 gold, 25 silver, 25 bronze)
