Rio 2016 Olympic Venues

The Games of the XXXI Olympiad will feature over 10,500 athletes competing in 28 sports. The sheer magnitude of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games means multiple regions of Rio will play host to the 306 medal events. The Olympics will be spread across four distinct clusters – Barra, Deodoro, Maracanã and Copacabana.

The heart of the Rio Games will be Barra Olympic Park which features the largest concentration of venues, 15, as well as the athletes’ village, the international broadcast centre and the main press centre. Twenty-three kilometres inland lies Deodoro which is the next largest of the venue clusters, with a total of nine venues including the home of the highly anticipated swimming events. Head east towards Guanabara Bay and you will reach the Maracana region and its iconic football stadium that will host the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the football finals. Cruise back along the bay until you hit the beach where the picturesque Copacabana awaits. The cluster ensures Rio makes use of its most famous assets as the sun, sand and surf encapsulate the vibrancy of South America’s first Olympic City.

The four precincts will be joined by another four cities that will play host to much of the football competition. Having recently been home to the 2014 World Cup, refreshed stadiums in Brasilia, Salvador, Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte will all feature matches. While the finals will be held at the Maracana – the home of two World Cup finals.
